In November 2009, the United Nations General Assembly declared 18 July to be the 'Nelson Mandela International Day' every year. The day was First celebrated on 18 July 2010. Passing the resolution, General Assembly President Ali Trekki said the international community admires the work of "A Great Man" who has always worked for other people.

Nelson Mandela was the first black former President of South Africa. Nelson Mandela was born on July 18, 1918, in the village of Mawenzo, Transsky, on the banks of the Bassa River. Before becoming president, he was the president of the African National Congress and its armed group Umkhonto We Sijwe, which opposed centuries of apartheid in South Africa.
Due to the anti-apartheid struggle, he spent 27 years in a prison on Robben Island where he had to work as a coal miner. After an agreement with the White Government in 1990, they created the new South Africa. He became a symbol of protest against apartheid in South Africa and around the world. The United Nations decided to celebrate his birthday as Nelson Mandela International Day.
