Who is the Chief Election Commissioner?
The Chief Election Commissioner is responsible for conducting free and fair national and state elections in India. The Chief Election Commissioner is appointed by the President of India. At present, there is a Chief Election Commissioner and two Election Commissioners as the head of the Election Commission.
Who is the present Chief Election Commissioner of India?
The present Chief Election Commissioner of India is Rajiv Kumar. Rajiv Kumar assumed office on 15 May 2022. He had replaced Sushil Chandra. Rajeev Kumar, born on 6 July 1951, is an Indian economist. Rajeev Kumar is a retired IAS officer of 1984 batch of Bihar/Jharkhand cadre.
He retired from IAS in February 2020. He served as a director on the central boards of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), SBI and NABARD. He also served as a member of several boards and committees. He was appointed as the chairman of the Public Enterprises Selection Board in April 2020.
What is the tenure of the Chief Election Commissioner?
The tenure of the Chief Election Commissioner will be 6 years or 65 years (whichever is earlier) from the date of assuming office. The tenure of other commissioners will be 6 years or till the age of 65 years. (Whichever came first). In protocol, the honor and salary of the Election Commissioner is at par with that of a Judge of the Supreme Court of India. The Chief Election Commissioner can be removed only by impeachment by the Parliament.

The Chief Election Commissioner in India is appointed by the President. Under Article 324 of the Indian Constitution, the President is empowered to appoint the Chief Election Commissioner of India and its members. This appointment has been made on the basis of the advice of the High Court and the Central Government.
On 21 January 2018, Shri O. P. Rawat (O.P. Rawat) was appointed as the new Chief Election Commissioner of India. He received the appointment by the President Shri Ram Nath Kovind. Precedence o. P. Rawat held the post of Chief Election Commissioner from January 2018 to December 1, 2018.
Dr. Nagendra Singh held the office of the Chief Election Commissioner of India from 01 October 1972 to 06 February 1973. He had performed the work of this important post during his tenure.
VS Ramadevi MA, LLM, was the Chief Election Commissioner of India from 26 November 1990 to 11 December 1990. She was the first woman to hold the office of the Chief Election Commissioner of India.
Sukumar Sen was the first Chief Election Commissioner of India who held the post from 21 March 1950 to 19 December 1958. For his services, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1954.
