National Maritime Day History
It is to be noted that on April 05, 1919, Scindia Steam Navigation Company Ltd. The first steamship 'SS Loyalty' was launched into international waters for the maiden voyage from Mumbai to London. In its memory, this day is celebrated every year since April 5, 1964.

The purpose of celebrating National Maritime Day is to make people aware of the activities of the Indian shipping industry and its role in the country's economy.

National Institute of Oceanography:
The National Institute of Oceanography is a laboratory of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Government of India. It is headquartered in Goa and has regional offices in Mumbai, Kochi and Visakhapatnam. It was established on 01 January 1966. Its main objective is to study the specific oceanographic aspects of the northern Indian Ocean in detail.
