What is the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT)?
The Central Board of Direct Taxes is functioning as a statutory authority under the Central Board of Revenue Act, 1963. The CBDT is a part of the Department of Revenue in the Ministry of Finance. On the one hand CBDT provides the necessary inputs for the policies and plans of direct tax in India and on the other hand it is responsible for the administration of direct tax laws through the Income Tax Department.

Chairman of Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT):
CBDT is the senior IRS civil servant in the Government of India. The Central Board of Direct Taxes is headed by an ex-officio Special Secretary to the Government of India and is also the cadre controlling authority of the Indian Revenue Service. In addition, the CBDT consists of six members. The chairman and members of the CBDT are selected by the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) and the premier civil service of India. These members constitute the top management of the Income Tax Department.
The members of the CBDT are drawn from the IRS and other major civil services of the country and are assisted by a number of attached offices. There is no fixed term for the chairman of the CBDT, but the average tenure of the chairman has been less than 2 years, although his tenure can be extended. The office of the CBDT Chairman is located at Connaught Circus, Mayur Bhawan, New Delhi.
Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) Chairman 2022:
The current chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes is Nitin Gupta. He was elected as the Chairman of CBDT on 1 July 2022 by the apex policy making body of the Income Tax Department. Pramod Chandra Modi is the fourth person to take over as the Chairman of CBDT.
Functions of the Chairman, Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT):
- Administrative plan of IT department.
- Act as an advisor and conscience keeper to the IRS.
- Handle senior appointments.
- Transfer and posting of officers in the cadre of Chief Commissioner of Income Tax and Commissioner of Income Tax.
- Foreign tax except cases under section 80-0 of the Income Tax Act 1961 and matters involved in Tax Research Division.
- To ensure whether the decisions of the cabinet are implemented or not.
- Seek advice from the Finance Minister of India.
- All matters relating to Central and Regional Direct Taxes Advisory Committees and Consultative Committee of Parliament.
- Public Grievances.
- Provide an element of continuity and stability to the administration during the crisis.
