But none of these names referred to the whole of Odisha. Rather, these names used to represent only some part of the state of Odisha from time to time. Prior to the present name Odisha, this state was known as 'Orissa' since medieval times, which was officially changed to 'Odisha' on November 04, 2011.
The name Odisha is derived from the Sanskrit word 'odr'. This kingdom was founded by King Od of Bhagirath dynasty, who founded the new Od-dynasty and Odr kingdom on the basis of his name. With the passage of time, the kingdom of Odra was ruled by Mahameghavahana dynasty, Mathar dynasty, Nal dynasty, Vigraha and Mudgal dynasty, Shailodabhava dynasty, Bhaumkar dynasty, Nandodbhava dynasty, Soma dynasty, Ganga dynasty and Surya dynasty etc.
In ancient times, a large part of the state of Odisha was known as Kalinga. The state of Odisha was established as a state of India on 01 April 1936 at Kanika Palace in Cuttack and most of the citizens of this new state were Odia speaking.
