Keeping in view the remarkable contribution made by Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis in the field of economic planning and statistical development after India's Independence, the 'Government of India' has declared his birthday '29 June' as a special day at the national level every year. It was decided to celebrate it as "Statistics Day".
A notification to this effect was published in the Gazette of India on 5th June, 2007. The day is celebrated by organizing seminars, discussions and competitions to highlight the importance of government statistics in national development.

The objective of celebrating National Statistics Day is to encourage Prof. in socio-economic planning and policy making. To create awareness and motivate the public, especially the younger generation, about the role of Mahalanobis.
