  • Scientists have discovered world’s second oldest grain of magmatic zircon (a mineral that contains traces of radioactive isotopes) from Champua Singhbhum rock sample in Odisha’s Kendujhar district. It is an estimated 4,240 million years old, making it world’s second oldest rock ever to be discovered. It is oldest magmatic zircon on earth.
  • An indigenously developed light weight 'Glide' bomb has been successfully tested in Chandipur in Odisha. The bomb -- Smart Anti Airfield Weapon (SAAW) -- was dropped from an Indian Air Force aircraft. SAAW will be soon inducted into the armed forces.
  • United States President Barack Obama on 27 August 2016 expanded Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument off Hawaii, creating the world's largest marine reserve.
  • China on 16 August 2016 launched the world's first quantum satellite named Quantum Experiments at Space Scaler (QUESS) satellite. The satellite was launched from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre in the remote northwestern province of Gansu.
  • China on 6 August 2016 successfully launched its first satellite for mobile telecommunication, Tiantong-01. Tiantong-01 satellite was launched from southwestern China's Xichang Satellite Launch Center, with the Long March-3B carrier rocket. More geostationary satellites will be sent into orbit for the system.
  • American researchers have developed a mechanism to convert greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2) into carbon monoxide (CO) that can be recycled into usable fuel. The mechanism is based on the photosynthesis process that trees uses to convert CO2 into sugars.
  • Brazilian researchers on 21 July 2016 announced that they have found another species of mosquito, which is able to transmit the Zika virus to humans. The scientists found the presence of the Culex quinquefasciatus mosquito infected by the Zika virus in three out of 80 groups of mosquitoes analysed up until now.
  • Juno spacecraft of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) on 4 July 2016 successfully entered Jupiter’s orbit. Confirmation of a successful orbit insertion was received from Juno tracking data monitored at the navigation facility at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).
  • India successfully test fired an indigenously developed Advanced Air Defence interceptor missile, Ashwin. It was launched from the complex of Abdul Kalam Island (formerly known as Wheeler Island) off Odisha coast. The advanced version of low altitude supersonic ballistic interceptor missile was fired at a ballistic missile, a modified version of Prithvi weapon system. It was test fired to validate various parameters of the interceptor in flight mode.
  • The world’s first public dengue vaccination programme was launched in the Philippines as nurses began injecting the first batch of a million children with a French drug to combat the sometimes deadly disease. Hundreds of fourth-graders at a public school in metropolitan Manila’s Marikina city were given the first of three shots of Dengvaxia.
  • India successfully test-fired indigenously built nuclear-capable intermediate range Agni-I ballistic missile. It was launched from launch pad-4 of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Abdul Kalam Island (Wheeler Island) on the Odisha coast.
  • Scientists at a lab in Hyderabad said that they have developed the world’s first vaccine against the Zika Virus. As per media reports, the Hyderabad based Bharat Biotech International Limited has said that it has patented the Zika vaccine.
  • PSLV-C31, successfully launched the 1425 kg IRNSS-1E, the fifth satellite in the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) today morning (January 20, 2016) from Satish Dhawan Space Centre SHAR, Sriharikota. This is the thirty second consecutively successful mission of PSLV and the eleventh in its ‘XL’ configuration.
  • India successfully test fired its indigenously developed surface-to-surface nuclear capable Prithvi-II missile. The missile was fired from a mobile launcher at the Integrated Test Range (ITR) Chandipur in Balasore district on the Odisha coast. Having a strike range of 350 km, the test was part of a user trial by the army. 
  • India successfully test fired its nuclear-capable strategic ballistic missile Agni-IV, capable of hitting a target at a distance of 4,000 km. The army's strategic forces command fired the missile as part of a user trial from the A.P.J. Abdul Kalam island off the Odisha coast.
  • India will launch communication satellite GSat-6 on August 27, the space agency said.The satellite will be launched with the Indian Space Research Organisation's (ISRO) heavier rocket geosynchronous satellite launch vehicle (GSLV).According to ISRO, the GSLV rocket carrying the GSat-6 communication satellite weighing over 2,100 kg will blast off at 4.52 p.m. on August 27.
  • A global satellite for earth observation and disaster risk reduction -- GlobalSat for DRR -- proposed under the UN framework is to be dedicated to A.P.J. Abdul Kalam as a tribute to the vision of the celebrated rocket scientist and former Indian president who died 27 July. This has been stated by Milind Pimprikar, Chairman of CANEUS (CANada-EUrope-US-ASia) Organization on Space Technologies for Societal Applications headquartered in Montreal, Canada.
  • A senior ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) official said that India’s Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) “Mangalyaan” is all set to enter into an autonomous phase as the sun will snap communication between earth and the MOM satellite. ISRO is calling it the “blackout phase”. 
  • Indian Army is all set to induct almost entirely the indigenous AWS or Akash Weapon System, after a long wait of 32 years. This missile system creates a proven shield up to a maximum of 25 kms and 20 kms altitude from possible aerial missile threats released from unmanned aerial vehicles, drones, helicopters, and fighter planes. Defence Research Development Laboratory developed this surface-to-air short ranged defence system and is capable of launching missile from the information obtained from radar system. 
  • India successfully test fired a 3,000 km range nuclear-capable ballistic missile named Agni-III from Inner Wheeler Island launch complex, off the course of Bhadrak district’s Dhamra, in Odisha. Sources say that the missile, which weighs 48 tonnes, is 16 meters long and can carry warheads up to a maximum of 1.5 tonnes.
  • With Mangalyaan, India’s celebrated indigenous Mars Orbiter Mission, completing six months yesterday in the red planet’s orbit, Indian Space and Research Organisation has released six pictures of Mars taken by the MOM. Out of the six photos, three are of a large martian canyon called Valles of Marineris. 
  • Supreme Court Bench in a watershed judgement has termed reservation for jat community by including them in the Other Backward Classes category in 9 regions (including Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan’s Dholpur and Bharatpur districts, National Capital Territory of Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Gujarat, and Bihar) as unconstitutional.
  • GSLV-3, the heaviest rocket, has been successfully launched by ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) from Sriharikota on December 18. The successful launch has brightened hope for ISRO’s capability of making Indian manned mission to space a success.
  • Medium-range nuclear-capable Agni-II Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile (IRBM) has been successfully test-fired by India at around 9.40 am on Sunday. As per media report the trial was conducted from a mobile launcher from the Launch Complex-4 of Integrated Test Range. Agni-II's launch weight is 17 tonnes with a capacity to carry a payload of 1000 kg for a distance more than 2,000 km. The last successful test of Agni-II was conducted on April 7, 2013.
  • India today test fired indigenously developed ‘Nirbhay, the sub-sonic nuclear capable cruise missile at a place near Chandipur. This missile is capable of hitting target that is situated over 700 kms away. Ground officials have reported that the test fire was done at around 10.03am from Integrated Test Range’s launch pad 3. Firing was done through a mobile launcher.
  • India’s Mars Orbiter Mission (MoM) has entered Mars Gravitational Sphere of Influence (MGSI), which means the aircraft is within 5.4 lakh km radius. On November 5, 2013, the spaceport was launched from Sriharikota and is scheduled to enter the Martian Orbit on September 24, 2014. ISRO today successfully woke up the main rocket engine inside the spacecraft for 4 seconds that has been lying dormant for the last nine months.
  • ISRO and NASA are interacting over a possible Joint Mars Working Group. Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN?) spacecraft is all set to enter orbit of the red planet in a couple of days.
  • The BrahMos supersonic cruise missile has been successfully test-fired from defence base, the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur in Balasore district in Odisha. The missile developed jointly by India and Russia has a range of 290 km with the ability to carry a conventional weapon of up to 300 kg. The missile’s maximum speed is three times faster than the US subsonic Tomahawk cruise missile.
  • Scientists of Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) have produced an antibiotic, whose biological activity can be controlled with light. The CBI has questioned TKA Nair, adviser to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh,in connection with alleged irregularities in allocation of coal blocks which included granting of a block to Hindalco at Talabira.
  • Scientists of Georgia Tech have developed new software to prevent malware from sending spam emails and instant messages while blocking unauthorized money transfers.
