Guinea-Bissau was once part of the Kabu Kingdom, as well as part of the Mali Empire. Parts of this state remained until the 18th century, while some others had been under some rule of the Portuguese Empire since the 16th century. In the 19th century, it was colonized as Portuguese Guinea. At independence, declared in 1973 and in 1974, the name of its capital Bissau was added to the country's name to prevent confusion with Guinea (formerly French Guinea). Guinea-Bissau has a history of political instability since independence, and only one elected president (Jose Merio Vaz) has successfully completed a full five-year term. The new chairman is Umaro Sisoko Iambalo, who was elected on December 29, 2019.

At 36,125 square kilometers (13,948 sq mi), the country is larger in size than Taiwan or Belgium. The highest point is 300 meters (984 ft). Guinea-Bissau has the lowest per capita GDP in the world, and its Human Development Index is the lowest on Earth. More than two-thirds of the population lives below the poverty line. The economy mainly depends on agriculture; Fish, cashew nuts, and ground nuts are its major exports.

The ethno-linguistic structure of Lesotho almost completely Bsotho, Bantu-speaking people: an estimated 99.7 percent of people identified as Bsotho. In this regard, Lesotho is part of a handful of sub-Saharan African countries with the same major cultural ethnic group and language as the main language, with Sesotho also being the first official and administrative language, and that is Basotho.
